AARRRGH!! Arrogance!!

I’m so sick of the arrogance I see literally all over the place.  Especially when a political election is coming up.  It makes my blood boil!  There are certain figures who send me over the top.  Bill Maher is one of them.  He is the epitome of an arrogant jackass.

Truth is, we humans are none of us just one thing or another.  People love to look at Christians and say “What hypocrites!”  For example, I’m a 55 year old grandmother.  Someone looks at me and knows I’m a Christian…and how important that is to me.  So the image in their minds is one of the ‘church lady’ character on Saturday Night Live…stuffy and prim and proper.  And if they see me veer from that in some way, then I’m a hypocrite.  If they hear…hey, I sang and played keyboards in a rock band in ’89 and ’90…I love a glass of wine or a marguerita, or a beer on occasion, but just don’t believe in taking it to excess…whoa!! And then if they hear…but I have taken it to excess before…double whoa!!  Oh, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg with how much of a regular human being I’ve been who has gone this way or that in my life.  And that’s just me.  What about the preachers who get caught having affairs?  Then it’s, “See there!  See the hypocrisy!!”  Yet a ‘supposedly’ Christian President can have sexual encounters in the oval office and then lie about it, and it’s “So what?  Who cares?”

What is my point with this rant?  My point is that every single one of us who is a human being is complex.  We’re not ‘all or nothing’ people.  Nobody is.  And NOBODY should sit and point a finger at anyone else, unless they’ve somehow arrived at perfection.

When I see arrogance from anywhere it is one thing that makes me madder than a wet hen…whether it’s Bill Maher, or someone coming from some opposite viewpoint…my viewpoint even, or with Christians who lord it over others because they’re not Christians and gloat with some thought of others burning in hell someday…because arrogance exists all over the place.  But that’s one thing.  It’s a whole other thing how people grab hold of it and run with it when these public people speak.  One arrogant fool can’t do a thing if the ‘little monsters’ that follow that person don’t run along behind and repeat what the person said, with their noses in the air and laughing all the way, like it’s some sort of jolly wisdom.  Am I being mean?  Am I being unfair or hateful?  Nope.  Just saying it like I see it.

I am just a human being.  I hope that when people look at me, the main thing they see is that I am a follower of Jesus Christ…because yes…that’s the most important thing to me, and the best thing in my life.  But they aren’t going to see some stuffy church lady.  And when I look at you, am I going to see just one thing?  I hardly think so!!

Can we just quit being haters and accusers of each other?  You might say that’s what I’m doing here.  I don’t hate Bill Maher, though he irritates the crap out of me.  I don’t hate anyone, but there are some people I have difficulty tolerating.  Who knows though…if I knew Bill Maher personally, there might be some quality he has that softened my feelings toward him.  Because he’s no different than the rest of us.  He’s a complex, real, living human being with thoughts and feelings and emotions…not just whatever persona he exhibits on air.  But all I’ve had the privilege to see of him, is the arrogant jackass.  So that’s all I have to go on.

Funny…I woke up in a good mood this morning.  I fed the cat, took Traci to work and got a cup of coffee with a smile on my face…then got on here and saw something that sent me seething…turning on a dime!  So now…I’m going to seek my ‘happy place’, because I like it there.

And yes…this is still sent out, as always, with love and blessings.  (Oh, the hypocrisy!)

Anne

    The hypocrisy… so true!

I can’t quite tell by your comment if you’re agreeing with the article, or that I’m being hypocritical, HA. 🙂

      • howanxious says:

Oh! I am sorry. I am agreeing with you actually. All of us are complex beings, with a multitude of thoughts and feelings and emotions. And you know, Anne, we are all hypocritical in some way or the other.

        • Anne Sikes says:

I agree! Thanks for clarifying for me. 🙂 I honestly try not to be hypocritical. I’m a lot of things though…imperfect in SO many ways. But as for the hypocrite thing, if people take time to get to know me, I’m not a pretender. Sometimes they’re surprised about some of it when they discover things, but I don’t hide anything. Nothing that I portray is anything other than some aspect of who I really am, know what I mean? But we all have faults and imperfections and stumble at times, or even purposely take some direction that ‘appears’ to go against what people may think we are. I’m not sure I’m making perfect sense here. LOL But thanks for your comments! 🙂

  2. I understand what you’re saying about Bill Maher…but I’m not sure if it’s what he said that’s got you frustrated or something else…I agree we all have different aspects to us and we should not be ‘judged’ because we act somehow in a way outside of how someone thinks we should be or act…some perceived notion by some for example that if we are Christian we ‘ought’ to act and do what in their minds Christians are only supposed to do….Have I misunderstood ….Diane

    • Anne Sikes says:

I’m not sure. The main thing here that I did was just rant…I was angry and honestly, if I would’ve taken a step back, I might not have even posted this article at all. But I thought that even my posting this…out of that moment of anger…in a way proves the point I’m trying to make here. We’re all human.

I saw an article this morning from Bill Maher, about the hypocrisy of Christians. Truthfully, I didn’t even read the article. Just seeing the title and knowing what I’ve seen before of the types of biased hate speech he puts out was enough. As I understand it, isn’t Bill Maher an atheist? When atheists want to point fingers at Christians about hypocrisy, as if they have a right to decide what we are or are not supposed to ‘look like’, that just angers me. But when anyone tries to decide what any group of people that they aren’t part of should ‘look like’, that upsets me too. Most of the time, those things just make me exceedingly sad. But there are certain people, and Bill Maher is one, with whom the mere mention of their name is enough to me that it stirs me up.

My daughter, in response to my reading this article to her, said it was definitely ‘over the top’. And I know she’s right. As I said, I was speaking from an angry place. And sometimes it’s a good thing to take a step back and NOT do that. But I don’t think it’s always a bad thing to honestly reflect a genuine emotional response to something. Know what I mean?

But no, it’s not ‘just’ Bill Maher I’m upset at. It’s an accumulation of people from all sides of issues that present their views with an air of superiority and arrogance. And as I pointed out in my article, perhaps some will look at this as being arrogant. It’s not intended that way…but just as my honest opinion. Did that answer your question, Diane? And thank you for your comment!

      • Yes it did Anne and I think it’s okay to ‘rant’ occasionally about something that really does provoke you to frustration and even anger…Yes Bill Maher is an atheist as I have heard him say so. Christians are a favourite topic of his…I haven’t watched him in a while but I used to before I got tired of his blase arrogance. Why is it okay for those that are celebrities or have tv shows to promote their preferences or biases and yet if we tried to do that even in our own circles we would be considered to be out of line to do so. There are others in TV besides him I have issues with….Diane

        • Anne Sikes says:

Me too. But I don’t watch much of it anymore. We don’t have cable tv, and I’m kind of glad…except I miss the history channel and discovery channel and especially Turner Classic Movies. LOL But the political shows are just so much hate and accusations and division and ugliness…and yes…a whole lot of arrogance. And the majority of them are very biased one way or another (usually liberally). But there are conservatives that get me upset too! And people preaching in the name of Christianity who spew hatred and sow discord. And all of that boils down to my point…every one of us is human…with both good and bad within us, and not just one thing or another.

Now that said, I do think that as a Christian, there is a way I should be seeking. But I’m still just seeking. Thanks again.

          🙂

  3. no one likes to be judged – we are all just trying to do our best, and I get angry too when people judge without really knowing what the heck they are talking about – they come from one place and are uneasy with people who come from another place — it is too bad
do not be ashamed of your rant- it serves a good purpose

    • Anne Sikes says:

Thanks for that. 🙂 Yes, it’s not even directed at Bill Mahr, but just at the state we’re in where so many people label each other and judge them based on some notion they have of that label, as if they’re better somehow…and it’s coming from every direction. We don’t listen to each other, we laugh at, and accuse each other…and then dismiss each other as unimportant.

Take care, and thank you again for your comment! Blessings –Anne

“When atheists want to point fingers at Christians about hypocrisy, as if they have a right to decide what we are or are not supposed to ‘look like’, that just angers me. But when anyone tries to decide what any group of people that they aren’t part of should ‘look like’, that upsets me too. ”

There seems to be a confusion of terms here. Stating how other people ‘should’ be is not accusing them of hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is when moral values are inconsistent, for example; between saying and doing, rules that apply to others and not oneself, or in certain situations but not other similar situations. It can be Rev. Haggard preaching the evil of homosexuality while having an affair with a male prostitute, or to say that physical violence is wrong—except for ‘disciplining’ children. There is plenty of hypocrisy among Christians, just as there is anywhere claims are made about adherence to moral values, belief systems, or ideologies.

I think it is unfair and unhelpful, unless you are on a hate mongering mission, to assert a negative stance towards any group or individual with a judgment as vague and sweeping as the opinion that ‘they’ wrongly accuse Christians of hypocrisy. There is plenty of hypocrisy to go around. Instead, how about considering specific instances and evaluating each in terms of truthfulness? When you do, try your best to keep your personal biases in check—or else you risk being accused of hypocrisy.

I apologize for the length of time it took me to respond. I have been busy and haven’t been back to my blog in some time.

As I expressed above in the comments, I was really just ranting in a heated moment when I posted this. Had I taken a step back and thought beforehand, I wouldn’t have posted it…or perhaps would’ve chosen more wisely the words instead of just ranting angrily. 🙂 Yes, I can be hypocritical myself…especially at those moments when I don’t take that step back and breathe before just reacting. When I set this blog up, it was done as a means for me to just talk life out, basically. In the process, it became a lot more than I ever thought or expected that it would, and I wound up with a lot more followers than I ever imagined as well. But it still remains an honest account of whatever’s going on with me. I don’t apologize for being human…and just as fallible or at times annoying…indeed…as anyone I was aiming at in my initial post above. 🙂

Thank you sincerely for your comment, and again, I do apologize that it’s taken this long to respond. –Anne

  5. Disillusioned says:

“NOBODY should sit and point a finger at anyone else, unless they’ve somehow arrived at perfection.” (except when pointing at Bill Maher doing satire.)

“I don’t hate anyone, but there are some people I have difficulty tolerating.”

Anne, your denial is revealed in your negative generalizations and oxymorons. Reality doesn’t change itself according to the words you choose to describe it. Of course, you can’t see it because you don’t want to believe it. Such is the nature of denial.

    • Anne Sikes says:

Not sure why you’re disillusioned. I would ask you if you read the above comments, or only my original post though. As I expressed, I reacted in a heated moment when I posted this, and opted to leave it because it does reveal my own humanness and imperfection. It’s honest in that way. As I have already said a couple times above, had I taken a step back I wouldn’t have posted it, or at least wouldn’t have posted it the same way.

There is no reason for disillusionment that I can see, short of someone expecting something out of me here beyond what I am…which is a normal human being who has good and bad days.

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it sincerely. –Anne

I also note your anonymity, by the way, although I may be wrong, but I think I know who this is based on the type of language you used in your chastisement of me. You certainly have the right to remain anonymous…it’s definitely a safer route to take than being open when you’re calling out a ‘friend’. I’ve never done it myself…for better or worse, I speak as myself openly and honestly. And I’ve noticed that most of the time when someone is anonymous, it’s because they have a negative comment of some sort, which I find interesting…just saying. And of course I had and have the right to choose not to approve a post from someone remaining anonymous, and obviously chose to air yours anyway. –Anne
