Oh Lord, will you give me a house on a hill
With a garden, and herbs on the window sill?
With a family kitchen with gadgets galore
Three of us working, and still room for more!
~~~
Lovely and open with natural light
Not too big though, so that cleaning’s a fight.
I’d like a piano, small grand if you please
Where I could make music, and tickle those keys.
~~~
But the most lovely part of this house I speak of
Is please fill the house with some people to love
Family, friends, and a stranger or two
Who may enter as strangers, but leave knowing you.
~~~
…leave feeling it’s your house that they were just in
And knowing that they’re always welcome within.
Lord I know that this prayer I ask you is bold
“You have not ’cause you ask not”, is what I am told.
~~~
So I’m boldly asking, and believe it can be
But if not your will, still content I will be.
For my heart’s like a house where your love will remain
May all guests who visit, find you just the same.

Beautiful!
Thank you Christine! 🙂
The poem is lovely,so picaresque, it paints a brilliant pic in the minds eye
Thank you. I appreciate that. I actually have this house that’s been in my mind’s eye for a very long time…years. I can walk through it…and through the gardens outside too. I envision family and friends all around, and much laughter and happiness within. I used to think that I’d have that house someday because the image of it is so vivid in my mind. 🙂 Now I’m not sure, but I still love visiting it in my dreams. And there’s no harm in asking either. Faith like a mustard seed. 🙂
Anne, I really felt like you were describing our house (minus the piano)!! Which makes me pause, look around and give more thanks to the Lord. Our girls usually visit at Thanksgiving, and sometimes we have a sibling or two over. And even we are not always in it. But I long too, for our home to be a place of hospitality and used for God’s glory. To offer a place of peace, comfort and safety to others. Perhaps one day YOU can visit– and be one of those welcome guests who feels loved and right at home. I think the Lord gives us a vision for a reason–to pray with longing, and to keep releasing the dream to Him to fulfill. He loves you, He is for you, and I know He is preparing a place for you, on Earth as it is in heaven. 🙂
Linda, this brought tears to my eyes. Funny thing though…I thought of you as I was writing that poem, because of your house in the hills…and because I know you both and that your hearts are those houses where God dwells too, as well as the home you live in. I would love to visit your house on a hill. 🙂 Love you!! xoxo ♥
